The
dialogue promoting event was held in Oslo on the 5th and 6th of May,
with the joint supervision of The Islamic League in Norway and The
Christian Council of Norway, and was sponsored by the International
Association for New Muslims and held with the participation of both
Muslim and Christian parties. The event was also attended by delegations
of scholars and thinkers coming from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Syria, Sweden
and other European countries.
The first day of the event witnessed a number of segments, such
as a speech delivered by the Mayor of Oslo Mr. Erling Lae in which he
emphasised Oslo's need for dialogue and that the event is a foundation
stone of establishing mutual tolerance, and a speech on behalf of the
Islamic League in Norway delivered by Sister Lina Larsen who highlighted
the importance of dialogue between religious representatives. The
spokesperson of the Church also delivered a speech emphasising the same
ideas, stating that the path of dialogue which was initiated at the
event must continue to be applied after the event in order to render the
desired results. A speech was also delivered by the secretary general of
the International Association for New Muslims Mr. Khalid Al-Romaih in
which he thanked both the Islamic League in Norway and the Municipality
of Oslo for preparing the event.
After the speeches were delivered, the attendants were divided into
three discussion groups. One group discussed about environmental matters
with the participation of a representative from the Global Environmental
Conservation Organization. Another group discussed matters related to
sanctified religious symbols. This group unanimously expressed the
importance of respecting religious practices and of showing mutual
respect towards religious symbols. It was also mentioned that
discrimination on the basis of observing hijab (i.e. modest dress code
of Muslim women) is unjustifiable. It was clarified that hijab is not a
religious symbol, rather, from the Islamic perspective it is a religious
obligation therefore those sisters who observe it must be respected. The
third discussion group talked about sport and its importance in
multi-cultural societies. During the day, the Norwegian media and press
were present.
Near the end of the first day, there was a segment for the youth, in
which they expressed their experiences of living tolerantly, expressing
their success in achieving mutual tolerance and making strong
friendships with various people of various creeds. Such success is
attributed to a principle which has been adopted by the event and which
could be summarized as: Dialogue leads to becoming mutually acquainted
and that leads to mutual respect, which is practically projected within
social dealings.
The second day of the event was reserved for the Muslim community
of Norway and for the new Muslims. The segments were mainly cultural, as
a number of lectures and symposiums were held. It started with a
recitation from the Holy Qur'an, which was followed by a speech by Mr.
Brahim Belkilani, head of the Islamic League in Norway, in which he
thanked the guests, specifically Mr. Khalid Al-Romaih for sponsoring the
event. In return, the secretary general of the International Association
for New Muslims Mr. Khalid Al-Romaih delivered a speech of gratitude to
the Islamic League in Norway, to the Municipality of Oslo and to the
participants who came from abroad. He emphasised that the International
Association for New Muslims strives to embed the principle of dialogue
into all the events it organizes for new Muslims. Afterwards, a lecture
was delivered by Dr. Ali Qurra-Daghi titled "We and the Other". Also, a
symposium was held to discuss the mission of Muslims in the west. Four
participating parties presented their experiences. The participants
delivered a good presentation to the audience.
The second half of that day focused on Muslim women and their role in
constructing civilization. The lady audience showed great esteem towards
Dr. Kenza Al-Ghali's segment. She delivered a lecture entitled "Cultural
Exchange between Islam and Europe: Past and Present". She highlighted
the greatest obstacles which previously and presently hinder cultural
exchange between Muslims and Europe, and emphasised that the Muslim
community in the West is considered to be the bridge between Islam and
the Western societies. Coinciding with this topic, a symposium was held
by Dr. Muhammad Jaber Al-Yamani, Mr. Mostafa Malaekah and Mr. Farouk
Akbik. The symposium was attended by a large number of new Muslims.
The day was concluded with an open discussion between a panel of
participants and the audience. Many of the questions were related to
religious jurisprudential matters (i.e. fiqh questions). In the end,
everyone stressed the collective benefit of such dialogue-promoting
events and that such events should be further improved.
