The needs and
expectations of new Muslims |
|
Prior to its official establishment, the association carried out numerous
surveys and organized a large number of numerous surveys and organized a large
number of well attended focus groups that were attended by a diverse group of
new Muslims from a variety of backgrounds.
These meetings produced many interesting discussions as well as highlighting
many relevant and important things for new Muslims. The main ‘common’ elements
all of the groups had were the following:
1. The need for clear, informative and useful material that will be able to
educate them about their religion
2. The need for a social network that provides a caring and supporting
environment for new Muslims and which would preferably be based in a mosque or
Islamic centre.
3. Constant contact with Islamic organizations in order to feel supported as
well as be part of the community.
4. The importance of becoming a Muslim yet still retaining the link to the
society that they live in and are part of.
5. Being able to proved help where possible in situations where the new Muslim
faces trouble and antagonism over his/her decision to become a Muslim
